greening up

As part of the greening up of my home, I have started switching to green products as I run out of their environmentally unfriendly counterparts. I have made several switches lately and am pretty happy and feeling the good karma of doing good for the Earth.

I think the turning point for me was when I finished watching the Planet Earth Series on DVD, which are gorgeous and amazing. At the end, there is a small documentary about protecting out Earth and the effects of the things we use everyday on the environment. Really, I had no idea what was going on. There was a total disconnect between the chemicals I use everyday and the way they wash out of my house, into rivers and finally into the oceans.

So, here are my latest attempts at saving the world.

I just switched to Wintree Laundry Deteregent, which you can get at Costco. It cleans my clothes spectacularly and smells like Heaven on a sunny day. I like it more than any other laundry detergent I have used, and I cannot keep my face out of the laundry while I am folding it.

I also recently found CleanWell via Ohdeedoh. CleanWell is an all-natural hand sanitizer with Ingenium - a formulation of essential herb plant oils that is renewable. There's no alcohol in CleanWell but it kills 99.99% of germs naturally. It's now a staple in our diaper bag - a squirt or two after a round on the playground when no soap and water is in sight. We like that CleanWell doesn't make your skin feel dry and it has a great citrus herb scent. You can get it at Target. It also appeals to the little designer that lives inside of me, with its visually simple layout and package design.

As I try out other products I will let you know what I think.

    We are also trying to be more green and I really love the Method line of products (soaps and cleaning products). They don't have any chemicals either. Also available at Target in wonderful smelling varieties.

    That makes me laugh. My mom had some Method soap at her house and Dave scratched the o-d off the end thinking he was so funny. Oh brother. I had no idea it was such environmentally friendly soap and I never stopped to enjoy it's design. I'll pay more attention next time I'm there. Go Target. My favorite. Wish I had one here.

    Everything you buy is natural evirofriendly. Their products last forever, way longer than the stuff you can buy in stores. I have used the hand soap, the candles are my favorite kind of candle, I don't buy any other brand, they smell so good and last so long. I also use the baby body wash and shampoo. My neighbor introduced the site to me, she uses pretty much everything, hope that helps.

    Hi you don't know me, I am a friend of a friend... but I just want you to know I am a fan of your site. I love your "I love..." posts. You are truly an artist in all senses of the word. I feel a little intrustive making a comment but I heard about a book I thought would go along with this post. It's supposed to be called "The Green Kitchen" and I hear its amazing. I am becoming more and more inspired to green up because of good examples around me and like you said about all of what we use going downstream.

    Also, I just put "The Green Kitchen" on hold at the library, I like to test drive books before actually buying them.

    I am friends with Amy Balls. I linked to your page through Joni's page. I hope you don't mind me reading your posts they are so inspiring. I have borrowed your "I love" ideas. I hesitated because you do it so beautifully and I didn't want to take away from that but it helps me see the good in my life and I wanted to share with my friends and family the happiness you have shared with me.
    After reading your post I continue through the week to think of things I love. Because of this I couldn't keep back the urge. I will gladly link you and credit you but I, again, felt intrusive doing so.
